Kalin: Erdogan will call Biden tonight – there are other partners besides the US

Recep Tayyip Erdogan will hold a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden tonight, his spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said today.

Speaking about the relations between Ankara and Washington, Kalin emphasized the following: “We do not see our prospects only through the United States. The United States is only part of them, one factor among many others. There are [также] Russia and China, countries of Islam and EU“.

“When we sit down [за стол] negotiations with the United States, we want it to be on an equal footing,” he added. On the issue of purchasing American F-16 aircraft, Kalin said that “if this does not happen, it will not be the end of the world for us. We will look for alternatives.”

Moreover, regarding Sweden’s membership in NATO, Erdogan’s spokesman said that the Turkish side “set conditions” and that if they are not met, Stockholm will remain “in standby mode.”

US President Joe Biden congratulated Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election as head of state in a tweet.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan won the second round of Turkish presidential elections with a result of more than 52% of the vote, said the head of the Turkish High Electoral Commission Ahmet Yener. The final results of the elections will be published no earlier than June 1.

“Congratulations to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on his re-election,” the head of the White House wrote.
Biden added that he “looks forward to continuing to work together as NATO allies on bilateral issues and common global challenges.”

Earlier, former US President Donald Trump managed to congratulate Erdogan, who on his page on the Truth Social social network called the victory of the Turkish leader “big and well deserved.”

Recall that yesterday, Sunday, Erdogan came out the winner of the second round of elections in Turkey, gaining 52.1% of the vote against 47.9% of the oppositionist Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

In this context, Kalin noted that the announcement of the new cabinet and the swearing in of the new government could take place on Friday.

“The US has been losing its influence in Turkey for a long time. <…> Perhaps Washington will be glad that the European Union has lost such a strategic partner as Turkey,” said Turkish political analyst Engin Ozer in an interview with RIA Novosti. According to him, it was the EU that supported the opposition during the presidential elections. The United States is more preoccupied with the situation in Ukraine, as well as the conflict between China and Taiwan.
