Port of Piraeus surpasses Valencia in container traffic

With a positive sign and actually better than the port of Valencia, which is the fourth largest port in Europe, in the first four months of 2023 the Greek port of Piraeus is set to take the lead.

The total handling of containers from berths I, II and III of the port of Piraeus, in the period from January to April 2023, reached 1.610 million containers.

According to data published by Cosco Shipping Ports, a total of 369.2 thousand containers were handled from berths II and III of the Piraeus container station in April 2023 compared to 296.6 thousand in the same month of 2022, up 24.5%. more. Between January and April 2023, container traffic increased by 1.8% compared to the same period in 2022. In total, 1.420 million containers were handled in the first four months of this year, compared to 1.394 million in the corresponding four months of 2022. And at least 190,000 more containers were handled in the same period from Pier I.

Analysts commenting on developments in the container market are cautious, arguing that international trade has not yet gained the stability that the market needs, as the global economy continues to be characterized by a difficult situation due to the war in Ukraine and rising global inflation.

General container handling in April 2023 in 35 ports controlled by Cosco Shipping Ports, which is part of the Cosco Shipping Group, excluding subsidiaries, increased compared to April 2022. Total traffic (excluding QPI) in April 2023 increased by 3.2% compared to the same period last year. Among them, Shanghai Pudong Terminal and Shanghai Mingdong Terminal have shown a strong recovery this month due to poor performance last year caused by severe cases of Covid.

In particular, in April 2023, 8.528 million TEUs were handled in 35 ports controlled by Cosco Shipping Ports, compared to 8.267 million TEUs in April 2022.

On an annualized basis (April 2023-April 2022), CSPL recorded a 2.2% decrease in total container handling at ports, excluding subsidiaries. In total, 31.9 million TEUs were handled in April 2023 compared to 32.6 million TEUs in April 2022.

At the same time, container handling in the first quarter of the year is in a negative climate at the port of Valencia, which is just one place above Piraeus in the list of the largest ports in Europe in 2022 (Valencia fourth, Piraeus fifth). According to the Port Authority of the Spanish Port, a total of 1,516,635 TEUs were handled between January and April 2023, down 11.94% from the same period in 2022. In addition, in April 2023, a total of 401,253 containers were handled from the Spanish port, which is 17.10% less than in the same month of 2022.

In the same time rail traffic from the port of Valencia continues to growas in the first four months of this year, a total of 8,744 TEUs, or 141,000 tons, were received and shipped by rail to the docks, up 15% on last year.

China is the main trading partner of the Port of Valencia, followed by the United States. The countries with the largest increase in cargo traffic in the port of Valencia are Mexico (+22.3%), Egypt (+22%), India (+18.1%) and Senegal (+17.6%).
