Hungry bear wanders around Thessaloniki – warning from the municipality

Local residents in the municipality of Pilea Chortiatis, near the city of Thessaloniki, have been alerted to a stray bear that was spotted in the region on Wednesday.

An eyewitness told state broadcaster ERT that he saw a “huge brown hump” near him while walking with a friend in the Gortiatis area. He also heard “strange footsteps at the same time”.

Apparently, we are talking about a bear, which in recent days has been repeatedly seen in the mountainous and foothill areas of the municipalities of Pilaia-Hortiati and Termi, where he wandered in search of food.

The eyewitness added that they were horrified when they also heard a growl very close to them. The competent authorities have been alerted to the bear’s presence and are advising residents to remain calm, giving advice on what to do in case they come face to face with the animal.

According to the municipality, eyewitnesses saw the animal right under the radar on the way to Kissos, in the area of Makedonomachon, near the park of St. Paraskeva. If local residents spot an animal near them, the municipality said, they are urged to report it to the Pilea Chortiatis police station at any time of the day or night.

In order to ensure the safety of the animal, the municipality added, the Thessaloniki Forestry Authority, the Greek police and the deputy governor of the region were also informed of its whereabouts.

Two months ago, a hungry bear raided a beehive farm in northern Greece, after eating about 40 kg of honey.

PS With the safety of the bear, everything is clear. And what about the safety of local residents and tourists? Or do the authorities not worry about this, because after an attack on a person, the bear will no longer suffer from hunger!?
