Athens program. Museum City”, launched in November 2022, is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, the Municipality of Athens and Google. The project was created with the aim of highlighting the urban, modern and often little-known areas of Athens, where you can have a great time all year round.
Two new itineraries are already available on athens.withgoogle.com with great guides showing us around the city. Peter Poulos, a Greek-American who has lived in the Greek capital for 16 years, “takes us” from the bustling Mavili Square to the charming and diverse Pagration district, teeming with restaurants, bustling cafés and new cultural centers.
Using the “virtual guide” program, during the “walk” you will get the opportunity to “feel” the city through the voices of its inhabitants: you will hear about the growing culture of running in Athens from the Olympic marathon Maria Polizoi, you will hear from entrepreneurs Christos Thasseas and Dimitris Anagnostos about how how they were inspired by traditional Greek fragrances in their latest business venture. You will also experience the emerging Athens contemporary art scene with Elena Papadopoulou.
London-born, Athens-raised and passionate about all things Greek, travel writer and journalist Rachel Howard takes us through two of her favorite neighborhoods below the Acropolis: green, welcoming Mets, often referred to as the “Montmartre of Athens” and Koukaki, where a new wave of creators and designers is breathing new life into traditional Greek art.
Take a virtual tour as Nicholas Loomidis talks about the city’s “love” for coffee and how it has evolved in recent years. Meet Christos Koutsoukos, who explains why basketball is so popular in Athens. Or enjoy director Argyris Papadimitropoulos as he talks about how the city inspires him to create masterpieces and also transforms into a new location for filming. Learn more from artist Andreas Finch about the special charm of the Greek kiosk (ελληνικού περιπτέρου), which is often the “heart” of every Athenian quarter.
“Athens. The city is the museum” is a fascinating cocktail of modern urban culture, shedding light on the neighborhood and endless aspects of everyday life in Athens. If you missed the first audio walk, check out athens.withgoogle.com.
