Diving park near Athens

A diving park near Athens will start operating in the next few years, after the completion of the procedures provided for by law.

A 30-acre diving park is expected to be established in the Megara Marine Zone and specifically in the wider Warea Zone. The Municipality of Megareo has already issued an opinion in favor of an environmental impact study of the site.

Approximately 3.3 km east of the proposed dive park site is Vurkari Wetland, designated as a regional park, for which protection zones, land use, development conditions and restrictions, as well as protection and management measures have been defined.

It is noted that during the construction phase of the project, the impact on the environment will be minimal. Two dive routes will be created so that the center can accommodate an equal number of groups of visitors at the same time. The exhibits located in the park will be submerged in water to enrich the underwater landscape. In particular, it is planned sink the plane, ship and 3 sets of statues.

In the northwestern part of the park, at a depth of 17-18 m, on a plot of 400 sq.m. place, will locate the “sunken plane”. In the southwestern part of the park, at a depth of 21-25 meters, the place of the ship’s sinking is determined. Three compositions with statues inspired by the mythology and history of the Megara region are planned in the eastern part of the park. Approximately at a depth of 24 m, it is proposed to immerse a composition of statues on the theme of Thesmophoria, a holiday in honor of the goddess Demeter, which was of particular importance for the inhabitants of Megaa and was celebrated only by women.

According to the municipality, the establishment of the diving park is expected to bring significant benefits to the local community, the Attica region and Greece as a whole. It is expected that the inclusion of diving in tourism product will attract a large number of new visitors to the area, increasing the tourist flow.

Besides inclusion of the region on the world map of diving destinations, combined with diving parks expected to operate in various regions of Greece, will further promote the country as a whole, stimulating the flow of tourists and strengthening the sector, which is the main pillar of the country’s economy.
