Poll: Seven out of 10 young Greeks live with their parents

More than seven out of 10 young people under the age of 34 in Greece continue to live in their parent’s home, according to a Pew Research survey conducted across Europe and beyond.

Greece occupies second highest percentage of young people living in their parents’ home, compared with 27 other countries in the European Union, with the trend being more pronounced among men than women. Greece’s figure of 72.9% is second only to Croatia’s 76.5%. 80.1% belonging to Greece are men and 65.2% are women.

In Europe, according to the survey, countries such as Portugal (72.3%), Serbia (71.3%) and Italy (70.5%) are “not far behind Greece”. In which a similar situation is also traced, when men “to gray hair” stay at home, with their parents.

On the other side the lowest percentage Mamsikov is observed in Denmark (16% in total), followed by Sweden (17.3%) and Finland (18.2%).

According to Pew Research, overall Southern and Eastern European countries have a higher percentage of young people living at home than Northern and Western European countries. This difference in outcomes may be due to cultural norms such as social norms and family ties, as well as economic factors such as the state of the real estate market, unemployment, and welfare systems.
