Attempted assassination of the Prosecutor General of Bulgaria

An explosive device went off on the way of the cortege of Bulgarian Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev near the village of Kovachevtsy.

The attorney general was in a car on his way to an event involving junior prosecutors. The bomb was detonated, but no one was hurt. Borislav Sarafov, deputy prosecutor general, said that the height of the fire column as a result of the explosion reached 4-5 meters, a crater formed 30-40 cm deep and almost three meters in diameter, writes BGNES. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the country launched an investigation.

It was publicly announced that the Prosecutor General of Bulgaria would go to Turkey, so law enforcement officers are checking to see if information about the change in the route of the cortege has been leaked. The Secretary General of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria, Petr Todorov, said at a briefing that law enforcement officers and experts are working at the scene, and a headquarters with the participation of law enforcement agencies has been set up to investigate.

A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, which will be chaired by the Acting Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Gilib Donev, and based on its results, specific measures will be taken on the incident. The representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Bulgaria stated:

“It is unacceptable that there is a threat to the life and health of every Bulgarian citizen, our actions will be categorical in order to protect the life and health and property of Bulgarian citizens.”

So far, there is no official information about what could be the reason for the attempt on the country’s Prosecutor General.
