An apocalyptic picture of hundreds of dead fish thrown ashore was seen by local residents near Lake Kerkini.
The incident happened ten days ago. The expert commission collected samples that were sent to the competent veterinary service to determine the causes of the mass death of fish. The coordinator of the Kerkinsky department Theodoris Nazirides told APE-MPE that the phenomenon was observed almost on the entire shoreline of the lake. “Hundreds of dead cicadas and butterflies have also been found, but the phenomenon has stopped in the last two days,” Mr. Nazirides said, suggesting that this is likely due to the special conditions created in the lake’s ecosystem. “However,” he continues, “because we have never seen such a large number of dead fish before, we are waiting for the results from the veterinary department to know exactly what happened.”
In a conversation with journalists from ERT Serres, professional fishermen gave their explanation for this strange phenomenon. According to them, at this time, which is the breeding season, females go to spawn. But, apparently, due to the prevailing conditions (lack of oxygen) in the lake water, they could not spawn, which led to their death.
