The US intends to seek the abolition of the preference regime for China – now Beijing, due to its status as a developing country, is receiving assistance from international organizations.
On Monday, March 27, the US House of Representatives passed a bill entitled “PRC is not a developing country,” according to which the US authorities should seek to deprive China of the status of a developing country in international organizations and agreements. How writes Deutsche Welle, the bill was unanimously approved by 415 votes. He prescribes:
“Seek to change the status of the People’s Republic of China from a developing country to an upper-middle-income country, a high-income country, or a developed country in all international organizations that include both the United States and China, and in the signing of any international agreements to which the United States is a party “.
The legislators believe that regardless of whether these attempts succeed, the United States should ensure that China does not enjoy “preferential treatment” and does not receive “organizational assistance in connection with its status as a developing country.” It also implies that the US authorities must report to Congress on efforts to implement all of these measures.
Yang Kim, one of the sponsors of the bill, said China’s economy is second only to America’s in size. But the United States is treated like a developed country, the same should be done with China:
“China is abusing its status as a developing country by receiving development aid and loans from international organizations.”
