On the eve of Easter, the phenomenon of “unfair competition” and obvious profit from products that from the “family basket” end up on supermarket shelves without a promotion are observed and intensified on the eve of Easter.
It seems, even eggs are about to become a luxury item, the price of which reaches 0.45 euros per piece! Apostolos Rautopoulos, president of the Hellenic Union of Workers and Consumers, said today that “the price of eggs that are in the family basket on Friday cannot increase by 120% on Monday.”
The official continued his angry speech, giving real examples: “In a certain supermarket chain, the following paradox is observed. On Friday, a package of six eggs is sold in the “basket” for 1.25 euros (at a price of 0.21 euros per piece). And on Monday, when the product was no longer subject to the “family basket” measure, its price jumped to 2.73 euros (i.e. the price per piece became 0.45 euros).
As Mr. Rautopoulos pointed out, the same thing happens with eggs sold under their own brand. President Ένωσης Εργαζομένων Καταναλωτών Ελλάδος added, among other things: “It is clear that there is a free market. However, if there was control, the Ministry of Development would see that on one day six eggs cost 1.25 euros, and on Monday – 2.73 euros. This is not the “rate of return” that the minister told us about.”
