Electronic pharmacies: what is happening in Greece

What does Greece have in common with Turkey, Serbia, Iran, Belarus and Morocco? These are six of the few countries in the world Where is the sale of over-the-counter drugs over the Internet in general not allowed.

On the other hand, there are at least 49 countries where online pharmacies are allowed to sell not only over-the-counter but also prescription medicines over the Internet, which is prompting new investment from very large e-commerce players, in particular Amazon’s imminent entry into the Japanese pharmaceutical market.

Cause? The continued growth of e-pharmacies around the world, despite the fact that almost no country has any more restrictive measures against the coronavirus. According to Convert Group’s latest e-pharmacy report, in partnership with Similarweb, there were over 13.6 billion visits to 989 e-pharmacies in 89 countries in 2022. This is 8.1% more than in 2021. Sweden leads the way with 24,058 visits per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Bulgaria with 17,549 visits, Norway (16,682/1,000) and Lithuania moves up to fourth place with 14,928 online pharmacy visits per 1,000 inhabitants. The UK dropped to 15th with 9619 visits/1000 inhabitants.

Sub-Saharan Africa was the region that recorded the highest e-pharmacy growth rate at 97.9% in 2022. It is followed by West Asia, which recorded a 51% increase, and Southeast Asia, with a 49.2% increase.

Where is the fastest growing e-pharmacy in the world located? In Vietnam, and this is the pharmacy “Nhathuoclongchau”, the number of visitors to which increased in 2022 compared to 2021 by 297.8%. It is followed by the Indian pharmacy “Apollo” (up 216.2%), followed by Nahdionline (up 129.3%).

In Greece, Convert Group tracks the sales of 28 online pharmacies. First in terms of visits is the pharmacy vita4you.gr with 968,206 visits per month, followed by ofarmakopoiosmou.gr with 809,268 visits per month, and in third place is the online pharmacy tofarmakeiomou.gr with an average of 517,859 visits per month.

The great growth of electronic pharmacies around the world is triggering significant business movements in terms of the “last mile”, that is, delivery to the final consumer. British company Boots is partnering with Uber Eats to deliver health and beauty products in less than half an hour, while India’s Tata1mg is using drones to deliver goods to avoid traffic jams.
