The inhabitants of Goumenissa were very upset when they saw the devastated apiaries. This meant one thing – the bears returned “home” 10 years later.

In particular, beekeepers suffered significant damage due to the appearance of bears on the slopes of Mount Paiko, on the border of Pella and Kilkis prefectures. According to a preliminary assessment, one bear ate about 40 kilograms of honey and destroyed 15 to 20 hives.

(Unless, of course, this is true, and not like in the famous movie …)

According to residents, in February a male was seen moving towards the village of Omalo in the municipality of Paionia. In addition, a mother bear with her offspring, two cubs, was seen near the territory of the fire department of Goumenissa, on the edge of the forest. A large mammal was caught in the lens of an automatic security camera installed by members of the Callisto conservation organization.

“The honey that the bear ate was last year. Its beekeepers-producers put it for top dressing, in hives. The bear, sensing the smell of the delicacy, destroyed the hives and destroyed the brood of bees,” Georgios Theodoridis, public relations manager of the organization, explained to APE-MPE. He added that bears were seen in the area about 10 years ago. And now its return to its former habitat is due to an increase in the population of this species of wild animals.

“We recommended to manufacturers (and they followed suit) to place the hives inside electrified wire fences and leave a small radio on so that the noise would frighten and drive away the animal,” Theodoridis said.
