The start of a long, almost three-month, heated pre-election period, when two rounds of elections will be held with different electoral systems and dense political processes aimed at governing the country the next day, was, in fact, launched by today’s announcement by the Prime Minister that ballot boxes for simple proportional representation voting will be established May 21st.
According to the information announced today and the assessments of political scientists, the main “milestones” until the day of the first round of elections, and then until the second, which is expected on July 2 in accordance with the election law adopted by the current government, the following:
- On Holy Monday or Holy Tuesday, 10-11/4, The Greek Parliament in its current composition will complete the legislative work current period.
- In the week following Easter Sunday, in particular April 21 or 22, or April 24, but in any case not later than April 28, publication is expected. Presidential Decree Dissolving Parliament and Officially Opening the Electoral Period.
At the same time, procedures are underway for registration political formations and candidates for deputies. In the meantime, in connection with the elections, at the ministerial level, some changes will have to be made with persons enjoying bipartisan confidence: this applies at least to Minister of the Interior and Government Spokesperson.
Now, given that the elections will take place on 21/5, it is expected that the next day, or at the latest on Tuesday 23 May, the Speaker of Parliament Costas Tasulas will announce to the President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou official results regarding the strength of the parties (seats) in the new parliament.
Because the proportional representation system excludes the possibility of ensuring independence, the procedure for issuing familiarization mandates to the leaders of the three leading parties will begin, which will last three days each, and will be initiated by the President of Greece, Katerina Sakellaropoulou. It means that by May 30 it will be completed. It is expected that on this day (Tuesday 30/5) the parliament will meet in a new composition – after the count of “crosses” is completed and it becomes clear who these 300 people are, in order to swear them in and elect the president the next day.
In the event that the preliminary elections are unsuccessful, the President of the Republic, in accordance with the constitution, will proceed to form a government to hold elections and proceed to dissolve the new parliament.
The date for the second round of voting is reportedly already “booked” for Sunday 2 July. Already on the 3rd or 4th (when the vote count ends), the speaker of the House of Representatives, formed as a result of the elections on May 21, will announce the result to the President of the Republic of Greece.
The leader of the party that won the absolute majority of seats in parliament, the president appoints the prime minister. If the winner in the second round is not determined, the primary elections will be reopened to form a coalition government, with a maximum completion date of July 13, the day the new parliament is formed, with the swearing in of deputies and the election of the presidium.
As a last resort, if even then it is not possible to form a government that enjoys the confidence of the parliament, the country will be led to a third election.
