To be or not to be an international tax on the rich

More than one hundred and thirty European deputies propose to create a progressive tax on the income of the “super-rich” by signing the corresponding petition.

The idea of an “international” tax on the income of the richest is to channel the proceeds to investments for social projects and the “green transition”. It is proposed that this tax should operate at the supranational level, writes AFP.

The authors of the project propose to impose a 1.5% tax on assets worth more than 50 million euros. MEP Oror Laljuk of the Socialists and Democrats group and economist Gabriel Zukman explain their support for the petition:

“Our proposal is simple: establish a progressive tax on the assets of the super-rich at the international level to reduce inequality by participating in financing the investments needed for environmental transition and social change.”

The deputies call on the European Union and international structures, the OECD and the UN, to consider a promising idea. They cite, as an example, billionaire Elon Musk and several hundred of the richest families in France, who paid 2-3% of their huge fortunes.

The deputies who signed the petition are predominantly “green” and “leftist”. It is also signed by economists and public organizations.
