In honor of the 202nd anniversary of the Greek Revolution, the Evzones will march in a parade in New York.
The event will take place on April 30, and the Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros, received an assurance of the indispensable participation of the Evzones of the Presidential Guard in the solemn parade this year. The cost of their stay will be covered by donations.
For the second year in a row, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou grants the official request of the archbishop. At the request of Philip Christopher, who is in charge of the parade, Archbishop Elpidophoros of America promised that he would find the necessary funds, in cooperation with private donors, to cover the costs of the presence of the Evzones at the parade.
The Evzones are an elite infantry unit of the Greek army that originated as light infantry during the Greek War of Independence in the early 19th century. Evzones were formed mainly from highlanders. Since 1833 they became part of the regular army, since 1940 they served in light infantry units and in the royal guard, recalls newsbeast.gr.
