EU court condemns Greece for polluting Thessaloniki

The European Court has once again condemned Greece for its environmental performance and, in particular, for the extremely poor air quality in Thessaloniki.

The European Court on Thursday issued a verdict saying that it found a very high level of microparticles in the air of Thessaloniki, which Greece has not been able to cope with over the past decade.

European Commission monitoring of 10 micron particulate matter (PM10) levels in Greece began in 2005. In many agglomerations, problems were found with exceeding the limit values for many days.

As a result, the European Commission issued a warning letter in 2009, and an additional letter in 2013, arguing that, in addition to consistently violating restrictions, Greece had not taken appropriate measures to ensure that the excess period in Athens and Thessaloniki was as short as possible.

In 2021, the issue of air pollution in Greek cities was taken to the European Court of Justice, and the first judgment on the matter was announced on Thursday.
