Romanian became the official language of Moldova

Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a law recognizing Romanian as the state language instead of Moldovan.

Information about this appeared on March 22 on Sandu’s Facebook page. The President of Moldova wrote:

“Those who have been telling us for decades that we, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, speak the ‘Moldovan’ language, and not Romanian, pursued only one thing: to divide us.”

Maia Sandu argues that the Romanian language can and should become a catalyst for the consolidation of society. To do this, all citizens of Moldova must respect it, study it and speak it. Now, within a 30-day period, changes must be made to all laws of the country.

Back in 2017, the Moldovan government supported the consolidation of the Romanian language in the Moldovan constitution. The members of the Cabinet of Ministers then agreed to amend Article 13 of the Constitution of Moldova and replace the wording “Moldovan based on the Latin script” with “Romanian”.

And on March 16, 2023, the Parliament of Moldova adopted in the final reading a bill according to which the “Moldovan language” will actually cease to exist and will be renamed in all documents into the “Romanian language”.
