ΕΛΣΤΑΤ: Retail turnover up 31.6% in January

According to ΕΛΣΤΑΤ, retail trade turnover increased in January 2023 year on year by 31.6%. And compared to December 2022, it decreased by 20.5%.

For the first time, ΕΛΣΤΑΤ published data on the monthly level of turnover of small and medium-sized enterprises:

1. Retailers

For retailers, for which data is available on a monthly basis, turnover in January 2023 was 3.10 billion euros, an increase of 31.6% compared to January 2022 (2.35 billion euros).

Activities showing the largest turnover growth in January 2023 compared to January 2022:

• Sales of other motor vehicles, up 76.1%.

• Retail sales of music CDs and video records in specialized stores increased by 67.6%.

Activities showing decrease in turnover in January 2023 compared to January 2022:

• Retail sale of carpets, floor coverings and wall coverings in specialized stores, down 8.2%.

• Other retail sale of new goods in specialized stores, down 4.1%.

Situation by region

Regions showing the largest growth in turnover in January 2023 compared to January 2022:

• Crete, an increase of 36.3%.

• South Aegean region, an increase of 24.9%.

The region that showed decline in turnover in January 2023 compared to January 2022, – Northeast Aegean region, a decrease of 0.9%.

For SMEs in the retail sector, for which data is available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2023 was 1.0 billion euros, an increase of 26.2% compared to January 2022, which was set at 0. 79 billion euros.

2. Retail establishments other than vehicles, food and fuel.

For businesses in the retail sector, excluding vehicles, food and fuel, for which data is available on a monthly basis, the turnover in January 2023 was 0.95 billion euros, an increase of 51.4% compared to January 2022, which amounted to 0.62 billion euros, and a decrease of 25.3% compared to December 2022, which amounted to 1.27 billion euros.

Regions showing the largest growth in turnover in January 2023 compared to January 2022:

• Western Macedonia region, 50.5% increase.

• South Aegean region, 50.5% increase.

For retail SMEs, excluding vehicles, food and fuel, for which data is available on a monthly basis, turnover in January 2023 was €0.39 billion, up 23.1% compared to January 2022 (€0.32 billion).
