Retired Air Force officer tried to commit suicide with his children

A 62-year-old man, a retired Air Force officer, locked himself in a car with his twins, a boy and a 2.5-year-old girl, and opened a gas canister in an attempt to take the life of himself and the children.

They were rescued after the man’s ex-wife and mother of the twins called the police, who immediately intervened.

The failed suicide and the killer of his children was under guard at the 424th military hospital in Thessaloniki. The incident took place around 20:30 on Sunday evening in the Melissochori area near Thessaloniki.

The police officers who arrived at the scene broke the windshield and saved the children and their father, arriving at the very last moment, as there was a strong smell of gasoline, and they were all in a semi-conscious state.

The two children were taken to Ippokratio General Hospital by ambulance, where they are being treated and considered out of danger. One of the police officers who arrived at the scene also inhaled gas and needed first aid. The 62-year-old father was taken to a military hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. He is hospitalized under guard.

The police searched the car and found a second gas bottle in the trunk, which, unlike the first, was still sealed. ABOUTa retired officer who is suspected of attempting to harm himself and his children will be charged. The Thessaloniki Police Department for the Investigation of Crimes Against Life is conducting a preliminary investigation.
