Mitsotakis’ shocking proposal for the Summit on "green" energy highways in Europe

The energy security of Europe and the decarbonization of the Old Continent is the highest priority of the 27 Member States. In this context, Greece is taking the lead in ensuring EU alternative energy sources other than natural gas (through FSRU projects offshore Thrace and new pipelines with the Balkan countries).

Electrical lines

Reportedly, we are talking about electrical connections between North Africa and the Middle East, and Greece. The purpose of the submarine cables is to transfer electricity from the rich renewable sources of Egypt and Israel to our country, and through powerful transmission networks – green and cheap electricity to the Balkan countries and the countries of Central Europe.

A few months ago, Minister of the Environment and Energy Kostas Skrekas, in cooperation with ADMIE, presented a proposal for transporting green electricity to Austria and Germany. This is what requires close cooperation between the operators in Europe, between the operators of Greece and the operators of the aforementioned countries. This particular route… had two alternative routes: either through the Western Balkans or underwater from the Adriatic.

Mitsotakis
According to Bloomberg, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will present at the summit a plan to modernize the European Union’s electricity grid to lay the foundation for more massive production of electricity from renewable sources and transport it to Central Europe.

According to the same publication, the country wants to strengthen the so-called north-south corridors so that areas with high levels of wind energy production are better connected to areas that produce solar energy. Mitsotakis will present the proposal to leaders at the March 23-24 summit, according to a source cited by the news agency.

The relevant document, available to Bloomberg, which comes from the Greek side, states the following: “We need to redouble our efforts to expand and strengthen the power grid in Europe. Investment in the grid is lower than what is needed for a zero-energy power system.”

The Greek non-paper also calls for improved connectivity in the Western Balkans, where solar and wind generation still lags behind coal, along with speeding up the permitting process and creating a “European grid fund” to finance the development of grid improvements.
