The race for cod on the eve of the holiday on March 25

As is usually the case before any revered holiday, which in Greece is celebrated with a certain traditional dish, the price rises sharply for it.

Cod this year will be especially “salty”, as the trading market began to slowly “warm up” on the eve of March 25th. The price of this fish, as reported by TV channels, has increased significantly.

This year, the favorite dish of many Greeks, which is usually served on March 25, for many consumers are unavailable, since 1 kilogram costs 23 euros (!). In particular, according to MEGA, first-class cod from Iceland costs between 19.80 and 22.80 euros per kilogram, while last year it cost between 18 and 20 euros.

Most consumers have already begun to stock up, buy food for the table for the holiday on March 25th. The reporters did their own little research by walking through the fish rows in the central market of Athens. According to traders, most people prefer cod, squid and shrimp. Consumers are expected to be more frugal in their purchases this year as they have already seen food prices rise compared to last year.

“A traditional dish, garlic cod (μπακαλιάρος σκορδαλιά), of course, will show off on the festive tables of the Greeks. However, it should be noted that consumers have become more frugal because purchasing power has certainly fallen. Many products have become a bit more expensive compared to last year,” said Charalambos Liveratos, who runs a fish shop.

Frozen cod is expected to be available to consumers on Wednesday, shortly before March 25. In supermarkets, it will appear in the “family basket”, i.e. at a good price.
