Rhodes: Plane took off 2 hours late due to engine damage by birds

On Sunday morning, 138 passengers of the Rhodes-Athens flight were delayed at the island’s airport for two hours.

The problem arose with a Sky Express plane, during the landing of which a bird got into the engine. After passing the technical inspection and repairing the damage, the liner flew to Athens at 10.30 am, informs dimokratiki.gr.

Despite enhanced air travel security measures, cases of birds getting into an aircraft engine are not uncommon. Most often this happens during takeoff or landing, writes flightradar24. The collision of birds with aircraft causes various breakdowns of equipment, which entails the emergence of dangerous situations for flight participants. Most often, birds fall:

  1. To the engine. The incident causes damage to the compressor blades. As a result, they are destroyed, the engine fails and can ignite.
  2. Through the cab window. A strong blow can cause cracks and even break the glazing, causing cabin depressurization and endangering the health and life of the pilots, and subsequently all passengers.
  3. In the fuselage, nose. In this case, the structural units of the vessel can be seriously damaged, but the flight itself does not pose a danger to the crew and passengers.
