Omonia station is real "gas chamber"

Complaints about shortcomings in the operation of public transport after the tragedy in Tempi, which claimed the lives of 57 people, have no end. The railroad disaster has highlighted a statement from railway workers’ unions, who lament the lack of personnel and inoperative (or non-existent) essential safety systems that could prevent or correct any human error.

Complaints about transport safety in general in Greece came to the fore. A typical complaint is that the ventilation system at Omonia Station has not been functioning for the past 8 years. According to the head of the ΣΤΑΣΥ of the ΗΣΑΠ line, Panos Kontoyannis, this is a security hole that was first discovered in 2015 and still remains unresolved 8 years later.

According to the newspaper ΤΑ ΝΕΑ, in March 2018, the Athenian Criminal Prosecutor urgently appointed two experts to investigate the enforcement of the provisions of the security law. That is, whether the relevant legislation is observed on the section of the ΗΣΑΠ line from the Monastiraki station to the Attica station.

According to the ΣΤΑΣΥ Committee for Occupational Health and Safety, the content of a specific conclusion, which, according to the newspaper, was brought to the attention of management, remains unknown to themas well as how it is necessary (and who will) solve the problem with ventilation, identified 5 years ago.

According to what Mr. Kontoyannis told ΤΑ ΝΕΑ, the amount of chemicals in the air samples was exceeded. But from 2015 to 2023, the damage has not yet been repaired, everything is left as it is. According to Dimitris Gurtis, a member of the ΣΤΑΣΥ health and safety committee, “The danger is that if a fire breaks out in the tunnel, the smoke will not be able to escape, and even if workers and passengers escape the fire, they will die of suffocation. And since there are no emergency exit lights, they won’t know where to run.”
