The Permanent Mission of Iran to the United Nations last Saturday announced the conclusion of a contract with Russia for the purchase of its Su-35, fourth-generation fighters.
The permanent mission stated that the Su-35 fighters are technically acceptable for the country. After the end of Iran’s restrictions on the purchase of conventional weapons, which are based on UN Resolution 2231, after October 2020, the purchase contract was finalized.
The agreement was announced edition IRIB. Iranian media claim that the Russian aircraft “is one of the most powerful fighters of the fourth and more generations in the world.” At the same time, IRIB reported that Iran was also negotiating the purchase of fighter jets with some other unnamed countries.
There is no public data with information about the number of fighters or the cost of the contract. Israeli media earlier, referring to the available data, indicated that we could talk about 24 fighters.
The receipt of Su-35 aircraft by Iran could seriously upset the regional balance of power, which would have far-reaching consequences for the entire region, the newspaper notes.
In recent months, Tehran and Moscow have noticeably stepped up their security cooperation against the backdrop of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. As noted by some media, Russia is sending Western weapons and equipment captured on the battlefield to Iran. According to the US, Tehran will try to remake these systems.
