Estonia wants to close online access to Russian TV channels, but…

Estonia plans to block access to Russian TV channels on the Internet, Helen Rohtla, a representative of the Estonian Consumer Protection and Technical Regulatory Authority (TTJA), said on Thursday:

“In general, for one reason or another, 50 TV channels are banned in Estonia. However, the ban can be circumvented using the Internet. In addition, access to 80 sites that are sanctioned is limited. We are thinking about how to close TV channels available on the Internet.”

The representative of the department states that in an open society it is impossible to completely exclude access to Russian information channels, quotes www.err.ee:

“There is still Russian satellite television through which all these channels are available. It’s like fighting windmills, where there is no good solution, unfortunately. We are working on those things where solutions are possible.”

During the year, the proportion of non-Estonians who consider Russian media channels an important source of information has decreased by three times. It is almost impossible to estimate how many people in Estonia circumvent the ban on broadcasting Russian channels. However, data from a survey commissioned by the State Chancellery indicate that the importance of Russian information channels has declined significantly. Marianna Makarova, Adviser at the State Chancellery, says:

“While in February 2022, 33% of non-Estonians chose Russian TV channels as one of the three most important information channels, by February this year this figure had dropped to 11%.”

She also notes that confidence that Russian channels honestly cover the topic of the war has more than halved: if in February last year, before the start of a full-scale war, 40% of non-Estonians considered reports about the war to be reliable, now 18% believe them. .
