The Ministry of Development and the region of Attica announced yesterday the inclusion in ΕΣΠΑ construction work to transform the coastline of Faliriko Ormos.
The project is included as a “bridge” between the existing and new ΕΣΠΑ with a total budget of 365.4 million euros. What has not yet been announced is when the remaining projects will finally go through the tender. According to the March 6 announcement, the restoration of Faliriko Ormos has been included in the “Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development” program. As noted, the first 110.4 million euros are included in the budget, which should be used by the end of the year.
Infrastructure projects that began construction in 2017 are expected to be completed (after numerous extensions and budget increases) during this period. As the authorities clarified yesterday in a statement, the next contract will include all remaining projects, as determined by a 2014 presidential decree. This is the creation of a capital park, about 4000 sq.m. new buildings and 31,000 sq.m. underground parking spaces, completion of footbridges and port facilities (such as jetties, islets and beaches).
It should be noted, however, that the topic of “revival” of the Faliro territory was raised back in the 60s, and in the last 20 years it has been at the center of many unsuccessful plans: from turning it into a metropolitan park with an aquarium, in the period before the Olympic Games, to proposals to create a major cruise port.
The “salvation” of the area was ensured by the construction of the Cultural Center of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation on the site of the old hippodrome in Kallithea. In fact, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation funded the restoration studies of Faliriko Ormos, directed by renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano, to harmonize with the design of the cultural center. However, local communities (municipalities of Moschato and Kallithea) have repeatedly expressed their outrage at the delay in the implementation of projects.
