Pandemonium and crush for a free portion of souvlaki

The festive atmosphere of Apokries was broken by an event that caused a public outcry.

It was in Chalkis, where the actions of the municipality caused chaos, a spontaneous and sharp reaction from the catering business. In particular, the municipality of Chalkida organized a social event on Saturday evening 25/02, where souvlaki was offered to all those present. More than 2,000 people gathered at Agios Nikolaos Square, with the organizers of the event constantly handing out kebabs and souvlaki (from noon until late at night), which of course worried the local restaurant owners, who reported the event to the police, as their eateries that day , needless to say, were empty.

The police arrived at the scene and during the inspection, it was found that ΔΟΑΠΠΕΧ did not have any medical permission, nor permission for these actions (distribution of food). Thus, the peace officers immediately set about to the arrest of Eleni Aidini and the director of the organization, Fotis Gunis, which were arrested and taken to the station. The detention of the “guilty” occurred after the owners of the stores complained on non-compliance with the conditions established by the consumer protection law.

Shortly after 01:30 am, the detainees were released on the oral order of the prosecutor. According to an exclusive video published by viathema.gr, the situation spiraled out of control at the time of the event as minors were given free access to alcohol in the turmoil.

According to evianext, the shopkeepers weren’t opposed to the celebration planned by the municipality, but in some way, so that their businesses, which had already bought a large amount of goods in three days, were not affected. This could happen if there was between them an appropriate arrangement so that the municipality does what it has planned and the shop owners do not lose thousands of euros at such moments. What, as it turned out, the organizers and initiators of the idea did not do with free kebabs, and the result was a “civil strife” that went to the extreme.
