The calculation of the cost of the lenten table was made by the reporters of the MEGA channel, who visited the market of Athens. As a result of a conversation with consumers, it turned out that “the prices are quite high”, but despite this, the demand for traditional products is also high.
“This year I bought less than last year, it’s not worth it, it’s too expensive,” said Nikos Hatsidakis, a city dweller who intends to celebrate the start of Lent with only a family of four. To lay the table, according to him, cost about 120 euros.
“Lagana, I heard, it costs 5 euros … We used to take 2-3 cakes, and now we will limit ourselves to one. This also applies to everything that I purchased for 1 day (to set the table once on Clean Monday). Last year and the year before last, there were a lot of purchased products, and they remained the next day. But this year I bought exactly as much as I needed for 1 day,” says the consumer.
However, most residents of the city believe that prices are kept at a high level. Mr. Vangelis will celebrate this year only with his wife. Despite careful market research before going to the shops, his spending increased by 40% compared to last year: “We bought cuttlefish and octopus for about 8-8.5 euros, while last year they were cheaper , for 4.5-5 euros”.
“There are also customers who, instead of taking one lagana, either because they are alone or because they cannot afford it, ask for half a tortilla… This is the first time I have encountered this,” the baker said.
In terms of demand, according to shop owners, it is quite high compared to last year’s level. For example, shrimp are sold from 5 to 8 euros, squid from 15 to 20 euros and cuttlefish from 10 to 14 euros.
