Failed SARMAT launch during Biden’s visit to Kyiv

While the US President was in Ukraine, Russia tested the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.

This is reported by CNN, referring to two anonymous American officials. One of them said that Russia informed the United States in advance through deconflict lines about the launch of the missile. The second official noted that the United States does not consider the launch of Sarmat as an escalation by the Russian Federation.

Apparently, the newspaper notes, the test was unsuccessful, otherwise Russian President Vladimir Putin would have talked about it in his address to the Federal Assembly yesterday.

One official said the test happened just before Biden was in Kyiv. A second source told CNN that the test would take place on Monday, but did not give specific dates.

test time, writes CNN, indicates that earlier this week the US and Russia were communicating through several different channels in an effort to resolve conflicts. U.S. officials also gave notice Sunday night, hours before Biden’s visit to Kiev, that the U.S. president would travel to Kiev, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday.

The intercontinental ballistic missile “Sarmat” was nicknamed “Satan II” in the West. According to official Russian data, the missile has a range of more than 11,000 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing 100 tons. Putin has claimed successful ICBM tests in the past, including last April, just months after Russia invaded Ukraine. This test was carried out for the SARMAT missile, which was first introduced in 2016. It was developed as a successor to the intercontinental ballistic missile R-36M “Voevoda”. Putin warned last year that the missile would “give thought to those who are trying to threaten Russia.”
