Market Pass: Subsidy amounts look ridiculous amid rising prices

Price increases recorded on supermarket shelves have averaged more than 50%, and thus the much-touted Market Pass, which “opened” applications today, has become routine campaign propaganda.

However, the government hopes that with the right “communications” management right before the elections, it will be able to deceive citizens by moderating their pain and worries associated with rising prices, which “plunged” the country’s population into despair.

In other words, if prices increased by 50% and the Market Pass returned 10% to the consumer, Greeks would still be in the red by 40%.

As a reminder, the monthly purchase limit per household receiving 10% assistance is 220 euros for a one-member household, increasing by 100 euros for each additional member, up to 1,000 euros of purchases.

It should also be said that these “subsidies” are not a “gift” from the government, as they come from taxes paid by the population of the country. VAT, one of the highest taxes in the Eurozone (and in the world), which in Greece is 24% on goods and services and 13% on food, brings huge sums to the state, which decides to give a very small part back to the citizens, so that they exclaim: “What a relief, it’s breathtaking.”
