Pharmaceutical company Pfizer/BioNTech has filed a lawsuit against Moderna over a patent for COVID vaccine technology.
Court hearing, informs Reuters, will take place in 2024. Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech are seeking revocation of two Moderna patents on mRNA vaccines. An earlier lawsuit was filed by Moderna over Pfizer/BioNTech’s Comirnaty vaccine. The company is seeking damages for alleged infringement of its patents.
A preliminary hearing in the London High Court took place on February 16, with a trial scheduled for April 2024. Pfizer BioNTech and Moderna are also involved in litigation in the Netherlands, Germany and the US. CureVac, which has been involved in the development of mRNA vaccines, has been involved in patent lawsuits against Pfizer and BioNTech in Germany and the United States, as well as in the High Court of London.
Messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) is a single-stranded molecule that carries the genetic code from DNA to the cell’s protein-producing machinery. Unlike vaccines with antigens, an mRNA preparation “records” the genetic sequence or “code” of the antigen. This is not a real virus, but the body learns to make antibodies to it.
