The boom in “maternity tourism” arose because of the possibility of automatic acquisition of Argentine citizenship by a baby born in the country and, within two years, by his parents.
Due to the inexhaustible flow of pregnant Russian women and the ongoing investigation, several of them were detained at the airport last week, and some were denied entry. True, later the authorities of the country nevertheless changed their mind, women in the last stages of pregnancy were allowed to enter.
The head of the migration service, Florencia Carignano, writes argumentiru, reported that 350 Russian women who entered the country in recent months were interviewed. It was possible to find out that some organizations for a decent amount offer pregnant women a package of services that makes it easier to obtain Argentine citizenship when a child is born in the country.
It also became known that the Migration Service is currently suspending or canceling the residence permit of Russians who received it through the birth of a child, but did not stay in the country, but left for Russia after receiving an Agentine passport.
