The metro “pierces” all of Athens: is a station planned for Salamis

The mayors of the 2nd arrondissement of Piraeus decided to take part in joint action to demand the extension of line 3 to Salamina.

Most areas of Athens are getting a fixed media network thanks to the ongoing projects including the new metro line 4, the extension of line 1 to the cultural center of Stavros Niarchos and the extension of line 2 to West Attica. At the same time, 3 new stations, which were opened on October 10, 2022 and completed the extension of line 3 to the country’s largest port, have made life much easier for the residents and guests of Piraeus.

However, the request of the municipalities of the 2nd district of Piraeus is that the tracks of line 3 do not stop at the Municipal Theatre, but continue to Salamina, with intermediate stations at Keratsini, Drapetsona and Perama.

At a meeting held on Friday 27 January 2023 at the Peram City Hall at the initiative of Mayor Yiannis Lagoudakis, Mayors of Piraeus Yiannis Moralis, Nikias-Ag. Ioannis Rentis Giorgos Ioakemidis, Keratsiniou-Drapetsonas Christos Vrettakos, Korydallos Nikos Khursalas and Salaminas Giorgos Panagopoulos decided to take part in a joint action to satisfy the request. In the context of the meeting, the mayor of Perama, Yiannis Lagoudakis, stressed the need to take the necessary initiatives to demand the extension of the metro line.

It is necessary that citizens who live, work or pass through the municipalities of Keratsini – Drapetsonas, Perama (and also Salamina) should be able to move freely. Additional metro stations will significantly unload the transport network, connecting the area with the municipalities of Piraeus, Nikia, Ag. Ioannis Rentis and Korydallos. The six mayors agreed that the expansion of the metro line, a fixed track that is reliable, fast and with minimal environmental impact, is vital.

Officials have unanimously decided to extend the metro line, in connection with which they will immediately visit the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in order to submit an application (in order to resume consultations with local communities) on the issue under consideration. It is worth noting that at the end of 2022, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport indicated that extension to Keratsini, Drapezona, Perama and Salamina is not planned.

Among other things, Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in charge of infrastructure, Yiannis Karagiannis, said that the government only promotes projects when there are studies and feasibility models, while at the moment the country is experiencing crises, including economic ones. He reiterated that the 2nd arrondissement of Piraeus would benefit from another large scale project.

In particular, as Athens News previously wrote, with regard to the expansion networks road junctions in Attica, mr Karagiannis announced: “Towards the end 2022 the tender for Egaleo Western Regional Highwaywhich with three modernized interchanges in Navpigia, Scaramangas And Schisto unload the western side of the city.”
