In the waters of the sea east of Mytilini, a rescue operation is underway to search for migrants – their boat, which set off from Turkey, was wrecked.
There were 41 people on board the ship, 18 of them were rescued, 23 were missing. Two dead are reported. The search and rescue operation is carried out in severe meteorological conditions – wind strength reaches 7-8 points on the Beaufort scale. Five rescued were taken to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.
Two coast guard boats are involved in the rescue operation, and a Super Puma helicopter is lifted into the air. Survivors are also being searched from the shore.
The shipwreck with refugees and migrants, according to the Athens-Macedonian news agency, occurred this morning in the area of Thermi in the east of Lesvos.
