Playing with fire: used Greek boats came out to intercept Russian warships

Greek Coast Guard ships (ΕΛΛ./ΑΚΤ) intercepted the Russian corvette “Steregushchiy” and the escort ship “Akademik Pashin” of the Russian Navy, when the squadron, led by the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush, heading for Piraeus, “crossed” with them at sea south of the Peloponnese.

Russian and Italian sources agree that Russian ships (the Akademik Pashin support and electronic warfare ship and the corvette “guardian”)located in the Adriatic-Peloponnesian direction, collided with the support squadron of the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush (CVN-77) and came close enough, but did not disturb them, since it is very difficult anyway due to the difference in size and strength two sides.

At the same time, the Russian ships accepted the visit of the coast guard ships, since they were approaching the national territorial waters (in any case, without violating them) and, of course, their participation was considered necessary to ensure the “maritime protection” of the American squadron.

We have never seen such a complex situation in this area, where the US and Russian navies are present, as well as US Navy aircraft.

As the Akademik Pashin continued to move south, a US Navy Sikorsky MH-60R helicopter, flying from a US Navy Support Squadron ship, was near the Russian ship. We don’t know if the Guardian-class corvette is still with Pashin.

NATO aviation staged a dangerous provocation against Russian ships in the Mediterranean. However, later the American military helicopter Sikorsky MH, armed with anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons, approached the Russian tanker Akademik Pashin and the corvette Steregushchiy.

“As of February 2, the US Navy P-8A Poseidon continues to patrol near the Russian warship Akademik Pashin. The Greek Coast Guard is also getting involved.” On February 1, the Russian ship Akademik Pashin changed course and now headed south, outside Greek territorial waters.

A US Navy Boeing P-8A electronic warfare and surveillance aircraft flew over the area in the morning. Then, an MN-60R helicopter armed with anti-ship and anti-submarine weapons approached two Russian ships, the Akademik Pashin support ship and the Steregushchiy corvette.

The armament of the American helicopter was not accidental: in the area, according to sources from the Greek Eastern Mediterranean Command (EDM), at least one Russian Kilo II-class submarine patrols the area with cruise missiles, the Steregushchiy corvette also carries cruise missiles.

It should be noted that the informal anchorage of Russian warships in the area of Kitira has existed since the Cold War… At the same time, the Greek navy had no claims against the USSR.

Most impressive is the intervention of the Greek coastal fleet against Russian ships, which are usually avoided, as American forces are more than enough to defend themselves, since nuclear aircraft carrier squadrons are the most powerful floating battle groups in world history.

Following tensions, the nuclear-powered American aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush (CVN-77), belonging to the forces of the US 6th Fleet, moored off the Gulf of Falirikos in Piraeus in the Aegean Sea, sailing on Friday morning. This is the second visit by an American aircraft carrier to a Greek port in less than three months. The previous one was at the beginning of October last year in the port of Souda.
