Longevity champion dog lives in Portugal

The oldest dog in the world, living in Portugal, is over 30 years old. The pet got into the Guinness Book of Records, Bobby’s age is documented.

And their friendship with the owner Liunel Costa began tragically, informs Sky News, – a little puppy just miraculously escaped death. He was born on May 11, 1992. All the puppies born with him were buried alive in a pit – the owners had too many dogs, and they did not know what to do with newborn babies. Bobby managed to hide in the corner of the barn, where he was discovered by the future owner with his friend – then they were still children.

The boys hid the animal from their parents until its eyes were opened – according to local custom, puppies can only be disposed of while they are blind. This magnificent guard dog Rafeiro do Alentejo is now 30 years and 268 days old. His whole life was spent in the village of Coqueiros on the west coast of the country. He was a “yard” dog who got along well with other animals and never knew what a leash was.

The old dog is now on a well-deserved rest. He rests a lot, and his eyesight began to fail. And in 2018, Bobby had breathing problems and even had to be hospitalized. As a rule, Alantea mastiffs live on average 12-14 years. However, Bobby’s mother lived to be 18 years old, and another dog from their “family” reached the age of 22.

The previous longest-lived record holder was the Australian Shepherd Bluey, who lived in the southwest of Australia, in the state of Victoria, for 29 years. In 1939, she had to be euthanized due to a serious illness.
