Weather details: EMY warns of hazards with the arrival of "Barbara"

The Greek meteorological service EMY warns about the upcoming bad weather “Barbara” by issuing an emergency bulletin: a drop in temperature, frost and snowfalls even on flat areas.

On Sunday, snow is expected from early morning on the northern islands of the Aegean Sea, from noon – in Thrace and Chalkidiki. Until the middle of the day, the snowfall will spread further south, intensify, affect the Sporades, the eastern parts of Thessaly, Evia and eastern Sterea, especially Boeotia and Attica. There will be snow even on flat terrain.

From the afternoon, snow will fall in the highlands and semi-mountains of the central and northern Cyclades, and in Crete, where there will be heavy snowfall in places. Snow storms will pass in the sea and coastal areas of the Aegean Sea.

Sunday 5 February

A gradual decrease in temperature from north to south by 8-10 degrees. The predominance of severe frosts in the continental regions, in the central and northern regions, freezing temperatures will be recorded throughout the day.

Stormy north/northeast winds of 8 to 9 on the Beaufort scale have been on the seas since Sunday afternoon. From Sunday afternoon in the Ionian and from Tuesday in the Aegean, the wind will gradually weaken. Snow storms will pass over the sea and coastal areas of the Aegean Sea.

Monday 6 February

Heavy snowfall will continue on the northern islands of the Aegean, the Sporades, Evia, Eastern Sterea, the Cyclades and Crete. Snowfall in Attica to begin Sunday, first in the east and north, and from noon will spread to most of the prefecture. It will intensify from noon, snow is expected in the flat areas. The snowfall will ease overnight, but will pick up again on Monday. On Monday, it will continue on the northern islands of the Aegean, Sporades, Evia, Eastern Sterea, Cyclades and Crete.

Tuesday 7 February

Snowfall will continue in eastern Greece, from Thessaly and south, as well as in the Cyclades and Crete, but with less intensity.

Anti-skid chains are a must

Checks on the use of snow chains begin due to bad weather that brings snow. The fire department has said in an emergency message that drivers should have snow chains in their cars so they can use them if necessary. In their absence, the driver is imposed a fine of 80 euros.

We remind you that anti-skid chains have become mandatory since October last year, by decision of the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport in charge of transport, Michalis Papadopoulos. Drivers, when weather conditions so require, i.e. in the event of snowfall, must have snow chains on their vehicles between October and April.

It is also noted that citizens should be especially careful when moving. All relevant services will be on high alert throughout the duration of the storm.

Preparedness for emergency services

On Friday evening, under the leadership of Minister Christos Stylianidis, a coordination meeting was held to assess meteorological data related to the upcoming bad weather and the level of readiness of all services. The next meeting is expected today, February 4, with the participation of the head of the ΚΕΔΕ and representatives of the regions that will be affected by bad weather. Mr. Stylianidis stressed that the entire civil protection mechanism is on high alert to deal immediately with any problems arising from the upcoming severe weather events.

Recommendations to citizens

Citizens are urged to be extremely careful, limit their movements to the extreme, and take all necessary self-protection measures in accordance with the instructions of the Public Health Service.
