January 2023 was one of the warmest on record in Greece


January 2023 was one of the warmest on record for most of Greece, according to data compiled by 53 weather stations of the National Observatory of Athens, meteo.gr meteorological service.

In a post published on Thursday, meteo.gr reported that the average maximum temperature in January 2023 was the highest in the last 14 years in northern Greece, Thessaly, the Peloponnese and the islands of the Aegean (except Crete), while it was the second after January 2014 for Western Greece and January 2021 for central Greece and Crete.

For northern Greece and Thessaly, January 2023 also had the most days that were warmer than the 2010–2019 average, with 29 out of 31 days warmer than the decade-average in Makrochori and Evia and 28 out of 31 days in Trikala and Dion.

In Athens, the average monthly deviation from the decade-long average in January 2023 was +1.8°C, with 25 days out of 31 being warmer than usual for that season.

Thessaloniki had the warmest January since 2010, with an average deviation of 3.6°C, and 24 out of 31 days were warmer than usual for the season.
