15 European commissioners arrived in the capital of Ukraine Kyiv

On Thursday, February 2, the website of the European Commission reports the arrival in Kyiv of the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen at the head of a delegation of fifteen European commissioners.

As noted by the EC, the visit clearly symbolizes the support of Ukraine in the face of unprovoked and unjustified Russian aggression. Members of the delegation will take part in a joint meeting with the Ukrainian government. In its composition:

  • European Commission Executive Vice President for Digital Technology Margrethe Vestager;
  • Executive Vice President for Economics Valdis Dombrovskis;
  • High Representative Josep Borrell;
  • Vice President for Interdepartmental Relations and Forecasting Maros Shefcovic;
  • European Commissioner for Justice, Consumer Rights and Gender Equality Vera Yourova;
  • Vice President for Promotion of the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas;
  • Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights Nicholas Schmidt;
  • Economic Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni;
  • Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski;
  • Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders;
  • Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson;
  • Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic;
  • Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhey;
  • Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries Virginius Sinkevičius;
  • Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and the Capital Markets Union Mairead McGuinness.

The message from the European Commission says:

“The visit of the Board is a clear symbol of the European Commission’s support for Ukraine. The meeting of the Commission and the Government of Ukraine will allow the exchange of views on many areas of cooperation between EU and Ukraine, to discuss future reconstruction as well as the country’s European path. This will also allow deepening the further position of cooperation with Ukraine.”

On February 3, the Ukraine-EU summit will be held in Kyiv. The military situation, the peace plan of President Volodymyr Zelensky and the support of Ukraine from partners will be discussed. Consultations between the European Commission and the Ukrainian government will be held the day before. According to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the central issue of the Ukraine-EU summit will be to evaluate the progress Ukraine has already made and further open accession negotiations, and will also touch on many other topics related to Russia’s war against Ukraine.

After the meeting, the leaders will confirm in writing that the future of Ukraine and its citizens is connected with the European Union. But in fact, the prospect of Ukraine’s accession to the EU remains remote for the time being.
