Newsweek: US support and titanium reserves in Ukraine

Experts call titanium reserves in Ukraine “huge” and attribute this factor to Western support for Kyiv.

As notes Newsweek, 20% of the world’s reserves and production of this mineral are concentrated in Ukraine. It is one of the five countries producing titanium ore concentrates in the world. Europe’s largest apatite-titanium deposit Semigorodskoe is located in the Zhytomyr region.

The publication says that titanium is critical to the development of advanced military technology in the West. This lightweight durable metal is widely used in the aerospace and defense industries: the production of aircraft and helicopters, ships and tanks, long-range missiles.

The United States imports over 90% of this resource. A Newsweek source with first-hand knowledge of the situation said titanium was a “key vulnerability” for the US. The publication describes the titanium collision as follows:

“If Ukraine wins, the US and its allies will be in a good position to create a new channel for titanium production. But if Russia manages to capture the country’s deposits and factories, then Moscow will increase its global influence over increasingly strategic resources.”

In addition, the publication draws attention: titanium has not fallen under anti-Russian sanctions.
