1 Leopard = 3 T-72: the advantages of Western tanks

Experts believe that one Leopard can be considered equivalent to three Russian tanks, like some other modern models of Western tanks.

The old Soviet T-72s, which entered service in 1970, form the backbone of Ukraine’s tank fleet. Considering that many of them, moreover, were destroyed on the battlefields, it is not at all surprising that Kyiv urgently asks for urgent help with the supply of Western tanks.

Everyone is talking about the Leopard 2, but there are other well-armed tanks that could be sent to Ukraine in the near future. Theoretically, they are superior to the T-72, still involved in military operations on both sides.

The T-72 is older than the Leopard2, M1Ambrams, Challenger2 and Leclerc, although it has undergone modifications like all other models. Overall, Western tanks are faster, better equipped, although they have a similar range. The big advantage of Leopard is their availability. An expert in the field of military industry, security and defense of the Delas Center Pere Ortega notes:

“Germany has delivered the Leopard to twelve nations. Therefore, there is a strong possibility that these NATO countries provide the components, charges and projectiles that they fire. The technologies that are built into the Leopard, such as night and laser vision, were not as developed in soviet times. Thus, one Leopard can be considered the equivalent of three Russian tanks, although Russia has many more tanks than Germany.”

In addition to the Leopard, Ukraine is asking NATO countries for 300 Western-made tanks, including the Challenger 2, the delivery of which was announced by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. And French President Emmanuel Macron said on January 23 that he had asked his defense minister to “work through” the idea of ​​sending a number of French Leclerc combat vehicles to Ukraine.
