Russian citizens who do not agree with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and have left for Serbia complain of harassment and threats from ultra-nationalists.
Vladimir Volokhonsky came from St. Petersburg. The former official was arrested for trying to organize an anti-war rally and, after his release, left for Serbia. He tells:
“I had a really unpleasant incident. In the apartment where I’m registered, they painted a big Z on the door. I had to spend 50 euros to clean it, it was very inconvenient. Really, it’s unpleasant. I don’t know What’s next, what else will they come up with.
In addition, the man received threats on the Internet:
“Several people, literally, on the VKontakte network, for example, wrote to me, including Serbs, some not very clear threats. I don’t really understand what they wanted. I can’t say that I feel particularly safe here. On the other hand, it’s not that I’m afraid of anything, but I can’t say that I feel safe.”
As writes Euronews, many Serbs do not condemn Russia, their historical ally, for its invasion of Ukraine. And ultranationalists rallied in support of Putin: murals appeared in Belgrade praising the Russian leader and the Wagner PMC.
As our publication wrote, Aleksandar Vučić, President of Serbia, declared the inadmissibility Serb recruitment to participate in hostilities in Ukraine in the ranks of PMC “Wagner” and called for an end to such actions.
The other day it became known that Serbian and pro-Ukrainian activists filed a statement with the Serbian prosecutor’s office demanding to initiate a criminal case against PMC and its supporters, accusing them of recruiting Serbian citizens to take part in hostilities in Ukraine.
