Canaries from Thessaloniki win world prizes

Greek kenari singers won gold and bronze medals at the world competition and charmed the venerable jury with their trills, leaving behind thousands of competitors from other countries.

Just a few days ago, champion canaries returned from Naples to Thessaloniki with medals that their breeders-trainers are proud of. Kostas Paliarutas, the trainer of talented canaries, who participated in dozens of competitions, spoke with special satisfaction and joy on the air of the APE-MPE radio station Agency 104.9 FM about what happened at the international competition, in which more than 21,000 birds participated.

“We arrived in Italy the day before the competition because the birds had to rest for a few hours before they could ‘come on the podium’. On the day we entered the hall, they sang for half an hour, as it should be, and the commission decided that they were the best,” says Mr. Paliarutas. According to the owner of the birds, his two quartets of canaries “took the upper hand” by a wide margin from the second place – the Italians. Birds took gold in 2020 and bronze in 2022.

According to the coach of the Kenari, the quartet from Thessaloniki did their best, and there was not a single dissonance, so they received an additional mark from the German judge for their well-coordinated appearance: 354 points and two additional points for the perfect interaction of winged songwriters, reaching 356 overall points and medal winners.

“It is not easy to synchronize four birds and there is a lot of rehearsal and training to achieve the result we presented in Italy. Our canaries were so synchronized as if a symphony orchestra was singing,” said Mr. Paliarutas, who has won nine world medals. At the same time, at local competitions held within the country, he lost count of awards!

The Thessaloniki retiree has been involved in canaries for over 25 years, and in 1995 he was one of the founders of the Association of Friends of the Canaries of Northern Greece. As he says, tenderly holding the winners in his hands, they, as a team, are ready for the next competition.
