Greece has no plans to host a US military base in Alexandroupolis, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis assured. However, he stressed that the United States can use the port city for its own purposes.
According to media reports, the northern Greek port has become a major transport artery for the supply of American military equipment to Eastern Europe and Ukraine. At a press conference in Alexandroupolis, a question was asked by RIA Novosti journalist Mitsotakis about whether it is planned to create an American military base in the city, similar to the base of the Court in Crete, as part of the Greek defense cooperation agreement with the United States. The Prime Minister replied:
“Not. How the United States can use it is clearly defined in the bilateral defense cooperation agreement.”
As known, writes GreekReporter, under the defense agreement with Greece, signed on October 14, 2021, the United States received several new military bases, including the port of Alexandroupolis and a military camp next to it. In May, Greece decided to extend an agreement allowing the US to use military bases on Greek soil for another five years.
As our publication told, the geostrategic and geopolitical value of the border town of Alexandroupoli for Greece rose sharply after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
