German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht has decided to resign.
About it informs Bild, citing several sources. The publication notes that the decision was made by Lambrecht herself, and not at the initiative of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. It is currently being discussed exactly when the Secretary of Defense will announce his resignation, and who will be the successor.
Bild says that according to the available information, a decision on a successor should be made quickly. The Federal Commissioner for the Armed Forces, Eva Högl, is mentioned as a possible candidate. According to Sueddeutsche Zeitungthe resignation of the German defense minister may take place as early as next week.
As previously reported, German Defense Minister Christina Lambrecht is increasingly criticized because of emerging problems: shortages of ammunition, artillery shells and rockets in the warehouses of the Bundeswehr. And not so long ago, a scandal arose with the latest Puma infantry fighting vehicles – all this equipment, after a week of exercises, failed.
The Minister of Defense was also heavily criticized after posting a video posted on Instagram, where she sums up 2022, but the words are drowned out by explosions of firecrackers and the whistle of rockets. Against this background, Lambrecht says:
“The year has given everyone incredible challenges. A war is raging in the middle of Europe. And that meant for me a lot of special experiences that I was able to get. Many, many meetings with interesting, wonderful people.”
The federal government did not comment on the video and confirmed their confidence in Lambrecht, while the leaders of the opposition CDU and CSU demanded her resignation.
After resigning as defense minister, Lambrecht is entitled to a pension of 5,000 euros from the age of 65, Bild notes.
