The moment when the doctors involved in the operation to remove organs from the body of 6-year-old Thomas, whom they could not save, honored his memory with a moment of silence is very touching, as seen on the broadcast of the ERT channel.
The operation to remove the boy’s heart, lungs and liver lasted almost 12 hours with the participation of special teams from Greece and Italy. In Greece and Italy, the organs of a 6-year-old child from Grevena were donated to three children aged 5 months to 11 years.
Thomas’s mother wished “good luck” to the medical teams in the hope that her child’s heart would make dreams come true not only for Thomas (whose life will last in others) but also for the recipient.
Little Thomas ended up in the intensive care unit of the Patras hospital, where he was transferred after a severe heart attack that happened to him at home. After a stubborn struggle by doctors for the life of the baby, which was not crowned with success, the doctors found that the child’s brain was dead. They informed the mother about this, and she agreed to donate.
Thomas’s funeral will take place in Grevin. The coffin with the body was delivered to the Church of the Holy Evangelistria at 15:30.
In addition to the fact that the parents donated their own child’s organs to save the lives of other children, they said that they would like to see, instead of wreaths on the grave, feasible donations that will be used to buy defibrillators for Grevena’s primary schools.
