Evia earthquake causes new fault

Seismology professor Gerasimos Papadopoulos recommends “great caution” regarding aftershocks in Evia following Wednesday’s magnitude 4.2 quake, as he believes the activation of a new source in Evia could produce a major quake:

“Earthquake at 22.03 on January 4 with a magnitude of 4.3 (EMSC), in the Vlachia region in central Evia, was felt in Attica. In my previous message, I noted that here we have the activation of a new fault. Much attention is on Evia.”

On Wednesday morning, before the magnitude 4.2 quake, another report noted: “A new quake in Evia! An earthquake of magnitude 3.4 and several smaller ones occurred at dawn near Vlachia in the northeast of Messapia (Psakhna). In Psakhna, the aftershock sequence continues “. However, the bottom line is that stronger tremors could also be a problem for Attica.

Recall that the shock of an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 occurred at 22:03 on Wednesday in the north of Evia, which has not yet recovered from the devastating fires of August 2021. A strong earthquake that occurred on Wednesday night (4/1) in Evia was announced by the mayor of the city of Dirthia Messapia Georgios Psatas. The quake was particularly strong and again accompanied by very loud sounds, local residents told evima.

When the site contacted the mayor, Psatas said: “No damage was recorded. The earthquake was especially felt, and we are in a state of full readiness, the residents took to the streets.”

According to the revised decision of the Institute of Geodynamics, the epicenter is located 6 kilometers west/northwest of Limnion, about 30 kilometers north of Chalkis and appears to be further north than the magnitude 4.9 Psachna earthquake on December 28, 2022 of the year. The focus depth was 11.8 km. The tremors were also strongly felt in northern Attica.

After a shock with a magnitude of 4.2, aftershocks with a magnitude of:
