Greece mourns: 16-year-old boxing champion dies

16-year-old Vassilis Topalos, a boxing champion, lost the battle of his life after suffering a head injury in training. The Greek Boxing Federation announced the death of a young man:

“Gone” is our golden child, our smiling Santa, a born champion with a heart of solid gold. Unspeakable sadness for the Greek boxing family… Words cannot express how we feel, we are all devastated. Santa, you left us too soon. We will always remember you with love and nostalgia. Condolences to family and loved ones. May the earth that covers you be light. You will forever remain in our hearts.”

Vasilis has been fighting for his life for several days after an injury sustained in the ring during a sparring session on Friday, December 16, at a gym in Kallithea. It was a normal workout, but at some point the young man felt severe nausea, abdominal discomfort and a tendency to vomit. The young man went to the gym’s bathroom, where he lost consciousness and hit a hard surface.

Another athlete who saw him on the floor called his father and the gym manager. Two men tried to give him first aid and then took him to the hospital. There, Vasilis underwent an operation to remove a hematoma.

Deputy Minister of Sports Lefteris Avgenakis has demanded an investigation into the serious injury of the Greek athlete, while the Hellenic Boxing Federation is gathering evidence to file a complaint against all those responsible, writes newsbeast.gr.
