“Holiday family basket” turned out to be more expensive than expected

The inhabitants of Greece, who were expecting a generous “festive basket” on the eve of the holidays, as promised by the authorities, were surprised to find that the beef in it costs … 2 euros more than on the market.

In the meat market, beef costs from 10 to 11 euros, and in the Christmas basket it almost reaches 12 euros. While the prices of the products included in the basket are generally determined by the competition between 13 supermarket chains and three electronic supermarkets, many violations have been recorded regarding meat.

As a result due to uncontrolled unfair competition, the price per kilogram of beef has soared from today to 12 euros. It is noteworthy that in supermarkets there is no control precisely to keep prices low for goods of dubious quality and origin. In the Christmas basket, the prices for meat are as follows:

  • A frozen turkey (France) costs €4.90.
  • Beef tenderloin, brisket (βόειο λαπά στήθος) costs 9.40 euros.
  • Minced veal costs 9.2 euros (fresh).
  • Veal shoulder (ALL A/O fresh) – 11.90 euros.

Accordingly, in the market, veal costs from 10 to 11 euros, that is, almost 2 euros lower than what is offered in the festive “family basket”. It’s the same with bread, where a loaf outside the basket is 5% more expensive than the one packaged on the shelf. “There is no need to “philosophize slyly”, fresh bread can only be baked in bakeries,” said the Greek Minister of Development, in fact, justifying the high cost of this staple food.
