How much do Europeans spend on food?

Residents of Kazakhstan spend the most on food, the least – in Luxembourg. The latest study determined the level of spending on food by Europeans.

How tells BB.LV, for residents of Luxembourg, food occupies only 8.4% in the expenditure item – this is evidenced by the data of the latest study conducted on the basis of information on household budgets in European countries. Residents of Kazakhstan are in the lead among all the rest – they spend 53% of all expenses on food.

Experts say that the rating is headed by economically developed countries of Western Europe. In second place, after Luxembourg, are the Netherlands (8.7%) and the UK (10.5%).

The countries of the former USSR and Eastern Europe spend the most on food. For example, residents of Moldova, Bulgaria, Belarus and North Macedonia allocate more than 35% of all expenses to this item of expenditure. In the ranking of 39 states, Russia was in 31st place (32.2%). Romania and Lithuania spend about the same amount on food.

Analysts draw attention to the close correlation between the share of spending on food and the state’s GDP per capita: the lower the costs of residents for the purchase of food, the higher the second indicator is. In countries with a wealthy population and a high standard of living, the share of spending on food is usually low.
